Travel Series | Greece: Skincare and Makeup Essentials

Hey guys! Welcome to the second post in my travel series leading up to my vacation in Greece this summer. I’m not the type of girl who who, on a normal day, wears tons and tons of makeup to school or work. Rather I like to wear  just enough to feel and look put together. For me, my makeup routine is usually very simple consisting of some type of lightweight foundation, mascara, and a lip product. This may not be the case for everyone, but this is how I feel comfortable and confident. If you like to wear more makeup, or no makeup at all, you do you! Everyone is different. A minimal makeup routine is especially the case during the summer months when it can get really hot and humid in NYC. As a result, I try to keep my routine to 5 products tops for an everyday makeup look.

Since I will be leaving for Greece in less than two weeks, I wanted to share with you guys my top skincare and makeup essentials for a vacation abroad or just a typical summer day back home. Without further ado, let’s get into my list of essentials!

It is well known now that daily skin protection is extremely important, not just in the summer but in the winter as well. Nonetheless, with the better weather in the summer people tend to spend more time outdoors and thus more time exposed to direct sunlight and harmful UV rays. Sunscreen is a must for body and face. Not only will it protect against burns, premature aging and sun spots, but it can also guard against possible skin cancers. Look for a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and with broad spectrum protection which will guard against both UVA and UVB rays. Also if you want to wear sunscreen under makeup, you can multitask and purchase a primer with SPF. The one I use is the Laura Mercier Primer Protect Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen PA+++. It glides on smoothly, hydrates my skin, and makes my makeup last throughout the day.

Light Foundation/ BB cream/ Tinted moisturizer

When I was younger I used to have acne that would cause hyper pigmentation marks all over my skin making it look splotchy and uneven. Though not as dark as they once were, some of those marks still remain. Currently I rely on a light layer of foundation or tinted moisturizer to even out my skin for work or school. Using heavy foundations in the heat and humidity can make my face feel heavy, like I’m wearing a mask. Opt for a lightweight foundation or tinted moisturizer during the summer time to even out the skin without the heavy, gross, feeling.

If there was one thing besides foundation that I couldn’t leave the house with, it would be mascara. I wear mascara practically every single day. I love the way that just a touch of mascara can make you look more awake and put together with fuller, blacker lashes. It is definitely one of my essentials year round.

Lip balm and Lipstick

It is no secret that I have an obsession with lipsticks. No matter how many I own, I can always make room for a new one in my collection. I like a no fuss makeup routine and I love the way that a different colored lipstick can alter your entire look. Nude lipsticks are always essential to anyone’s collection, but in the summer I like to also switch it up and wear brighter reds and oranges that just pop against tanned skin. Here are a few of my favorites:

Cleanser/Makeup remover

A good cleanser and makeup remover can do wonders for the skin. Removing all makeup before bed is crucial to maintaining younger, healthy looking skin. My skin is super sensitive and so I like makeup removers that are not harsh, and a cleanser that is gentle on my skin while getting rid of everything that the makeup remover cannot. Two of my favs are the Bioderma micellar water, and the Fresh Soy Cleanser.

Finally, with new contouring and highlighting palettes hitting the shelves daily, highlighters are no longer products exclusive to makeup artists and can be used year round. Nowadays, many of my friends own at least one highlighter. Although who’s to stop anyone from wanting that JLo glow year round, I personally think that paired with a tan, a natural highlight can make your skin look glowing and healthy. I’m a big fan off the liquid Becca Shimmering skin perfector in Opal. The liquid version does not make my skin break out and gives my skin a healthy “glow from within look.” You can read my full review of the Becca Shimmering skin perfector here.

These are the things that I find essential to take with my on my summer vacation Hope this post gave you some tips and ideas of what to pack on for yours!

Until next time,
